OVERVIEW
While most automotive enthusiasts covet the sedan or convertible, historically, the pick-up truck is almost as old as the first cars ever built. Since gas powered farm implements and tractors were already popular with American farmers, the truck soon became a fixture of rural utility, an important partner in growing American businesses, and as a candidate for hot rodding. Low cost used trucks were a big part of the early hot rod boom as they offered a great deal of performance and versatility especially given their durable chassis, robust body designs, and plenty of room under the hood for larger engines.
In recent years, as pick-up trucks have grown in popularity, contemporary hot rodders have turned once again to the stylish designs of the 1950s, applying the latest in modern engineering and drivetrains while maintaining the vintage looks and charm of the original designs. These restoration/modified or “restomod” trucks combine the best of both worlds with proven high performance engines, modern brakes, and conveniences like cold AC, automatic transmissions, and improved suspension.
Developed as part of the General Motors line of cars and trucks, the 1958 Chevrolet Apache was the light-duty model offered in the legendary Chevrolet “Task Force” truck series. Standout features included the all-new smooth Fleetside bed, quad headlights and distinctive grille, along with a panoramic wrap around windshield and stylish exterior trim. Widely regarded as one of the best looking pick-up trucks ever built, the Apache sold remarkably well and nearly 70 years later continues to be among the most sought after classic vehicles in the market today.
This Apache pick-up was the subject of a comprehensive restoration and professional build managed by the owner and Joe Maxwell at Maxwell’s Metal Works in Marrysville, WA. The theme was one that combined the authentic features of the iconic 1958 Apache with modern upgrades and subtle engineering improvements to build an exceptional hot rod. Among the many features included in the build, the chassis was thoughtfully upgraded with independent front suspension and rear suspension converted to RideTech coil over shocks and a rear 4-bar link. A power steering rack was fitted to the front suspension, and a tilt steering wheel with column drop with a new steering shaft were installed. An upgraded GM ABS-equipped power disc brake system and brake lines were installed for stopping duties and a new fuel tank was fitted with new fuel lines and an Ultra-Quiet electric fuel pump. To manage the impressive horsepower, a rear cross member was installed, the frame strengthened, and a robust 3:70 rear end was fitted. A new LS3 crate motor with Billet Specialties Tru-Trac top mount serpentine system was installed equipped with a Powermaster PowerMAX starter, and the engine topped with a Black Diamond Super Street Series 780 cfm carburetor. The engine was mated to a 700R4 transmission upgraded with a Bowtie Overdrive 2200 Stall HD torque converter and lockup kit. All new wiring was provided by American Autowire Highway 22 wiring to run all the accessories and lighting.
The interior was professionally finished by Rich’s Custom Upholstery including German square weave carpet, custom headliner, and matched brown vinyl for the bench seat. Custom trim parts were fabricated for the steering column and back panel, and cabin insulation was provided by Cascade Acoustical Engineering. Numerous custom made steel panels and covers were made and installed for the interior including fitting new VDO gauges and various custom items to the dashboard. Selected chrome was refinished at Queen City Plating and final finishes applied to the exterior including freshly finished wood for the bed liner and wide profile solid wheels fitted with “sleeper” dog dish hubcaps. The majority of the build was completed in 2018, though ongoing improvements and final sorting continued into 2020. Since completion, this truck has been driven 800 miles, resulting in a very well sorted restomod that can be driven with confidence and shown with pride.
Today, this truck presents in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition throughout. The build quality is evident at every corner including thoughtful care and service while under the commissioning family ownership. The exterior condition is excellent throughout with glossy two-tone paint that has excellent coverage, smooth and consistent gloss, properly fitted trim, beautiful exterior chrome features, and perfect stance. The trunk wears a pair of contemporary low profile Nitto Motiv tires mounted on solid wheels finished in matching cream and polished wide bead edges. Two-tone pin stripes traverse the eyebrowed quad headlights and travel the length of the body, terminating at the center of the tailgate above the dual under bumper exhaust tips. The chrome grille gleams like new while a set of Holley RetroBright LED headlights continue the vintage theme. The smooth Fleetside rear fender line is accented by round “bluedot” taillights with side-spears finished in the matching cream color. The same theme continues with the cream color wrapping the rear window and cab section. The tailgate folds flat revealing a beautifully finished wood lined bed. In all, the striking colors, hot rod stance, and subtle upgrades make for a dynamic and unique restomod.
The interior continues the two tone color theme on the dashboard and door panels. The finishes and custom interior work has been beautifully crafted and elegantly themed. The pleated brown vinyl bench seat and matching cream stitched headliner, German square weave carpets and matching floor mats, along with an array of gauges bring it all together confidently while avoiding quirky details or poorly selected components that often accompany lesser builds. Everything in this Apache is very well-resolved including the custom steering column cover, articulated accelerator pedal, and gold bezel VDO gauges. The tilt steering wheel and chrome drive-selector match the overall utility of the truck design, here too, not overstated, just right for the build theme.
Under the hood, the engine compartment continues the themes of excellence and design with a fully cleaned firewall, hidden components and wiring, and satin black engine finishes. The engine sits comfortably in the wide compartment which is impressive considering the horsepower offered in this engine is nearly three times the original output. Finishes are subtle, clean, and purposeful with easy access to the belt-driven components on the serpentine. Air conditioning, power steering, and high output alternator front the engine topped with a four barrel performance carburetor. The underside is finished with the same level of detail and excellence revealing the coil over suspension, rear four bar link suspension, 3:70 solid rear axle, dual exhaust and properly mounted concealed lines, wiring, and components.
As one might expect, this truck starts and runs with confidence. Plenty of power on tap but not overly brutish while cruising or enjoying summertime drives. Power steering and air conditioning make for comfortable road trips with the occasional downshift and romp on the pedal to widen the eyeballs of anyone behind the wheel or daring to doze off as passenger.
For anyone seeking a well built restomod hot rod pick-up, this is among the best available examples on the market today. Stylish, desirable colors, and thoughtfully engineered, this Apache is sure to make bring a smile to the face of any hot rod enthusiast.
