OVERVIEW
With extensive service records dating back to 1984, and documented ownership history from new, this BMW 3.0 CS is a wonderful example of the iconic E9. Showing just 69K miles on the odometer today, and believed to be true and accurate based on the service records.
The ownership history on this coupe is both well documented and interesting. The original owner of the car was Kenny Loggins (the singer/entertainer) who purchased it new in 1973. In 1982, Steve Jensen became the 2nd owner of the car, before selling it on to George Schuchart, who brought the car to the Seattle area where it has mainly been ever since. Beginning in 1984 with George, the service records are all-encompassing and include a full log of mileage and repair costs over the next several decades. The car traded hands again in 1998 to Colin Moseley (who handled major cosmetic and mechanical refreshes), and again in 2010 to Gordon McCall of Monterey, CA, and then was owned by noted BMW collector Peter Gleeson back in WA, sold to another local enthusiast in 2015, and acquired by us in 2016.
Cosmetically the car presents well. The car was originally silver, it was repainted in white in 1985, and again in 2007. The 2007 paint job was done at a cost of over $12,000. Exterior trim is in good condition, as well as the glass and all lights. The carpet and leather were redone in 1999. Alpina wheels are in nice condition and help tie together the sporting nature of this car.
The service records show owners looking for power upgrades over the lifetime of the car. The current engine is a 3.2L, fully rebuilt in 2004 and programmed with an Autronic unit. A 5-speed conversion was also performed, and in 2008, there was an extensive mechanical refurbishment of the car, including upgrading the rear differential to a 3.63 limited slip unit, driveline reconditioning, and dyno tuning of the motor and Autronic unit. The car puts down 220HP at the wheels from the dyno sheets. Continuing on the no expense spared 2008 project, new headlamps, new window motors, sunroof seal, sway bar bushings, and various other details were addressed.
The car drives wonderfully – power is strong and smooth. Triple digit speeds are not an issue, and the coupe remains rock solid at high rates of speed. This car is ready to be enjoyed today at the current level, or you can find your own signature to put on the car by continuing to modify various areas.
Included are 30+ years of service records, hand written letters between owners, as well as assorted original books and manuals.
