OVERVIEW
Built to leverage BMW performance engineering and legendary motorsports racing history, BMW launched the E30 M series as a homologation special to satisfy Group-A touring rules for racing. The first example was revealed to the public in 1985 with a handful of the very first cars built to race in the IMSA Firehawk Endurance series, and subsequently advancing to an historic 1-2 victory in the Watkins Glen 500-mile race. These race victories were critical to customers who were unsure that such a car could serve both performance and utility with equal prowess.
With racing victories posted in automotive journals, buyers eagerly stepped up to purchase nearly 18,000 units worldwide from 1985-1991, 5,300 of which were exported to North America. This market rapidly grew as BMW enthusiasts quickly discovered the special nature of these cars. Offering an undeniable balance of power, performance, and handling while still being every bit as capable of everyday use, the M3 hit the target perfectly. Ultimately the E30 M3 shattered everyone’s definition of what a fun yet surprisingly practical performance coupe could achieve – a sentiment that continues to draw new generations of enthusiasts and collectors alike.
This beautiful M3 was finished at the factory in Diamond Schwarz Metallic Black (181 BMW paint code) and trimmed with the desirable Natur Bison leather (0295 BMW interior code). Assembled at BMW on April 6, 1989, this M3 was delivered with a power sunroof, power windows, air-conditioning, a premium “HiFi” stereo system, cruise control, and an onboard computer. After completion the car was delivered to BMW North America (New Jersey) and sold to the first owner in Baltimore Maryland for $35,850.00. As mileage accumulated under prior ownerships in various US states, each owner chose to drive the car rather than deny themselves the performance enjoyment BMW originally intended.
In 2004, with 92,000 miles, this M3 was purchased by a well-known Kirkland, Washington collector who commissioned an exterior repaint, performed by Eurotech Bodywerks, Kirkland, WA. An engine rebuild was performed in 2010 by M1 and M3 race engine specialist Frank Fahey of San Diego, CA. This comprehensive and detailed rebuild is documented by receipts on file, and included very desirable upgrades in the form of an Evo 2 crankshaft and Schrick camshafts. Additionally, a Stromung stainless exhaust system is in place and an Eibach ERS Ground Control coil-over suspension system with Koni shock absorbers has been installed. Over the past five years, services have been regular including fluid and filter changes. In preparation for sale, the oil has been changed, and a new set of tires have been mounted on the correct factory basketweave wheels.
Today this beautiful M3 exhibits a very handsome metallic black finish which has retained high gloss and smooth coverage consistent with factory standards. Having been treated to a professionally applied repaint, the finishes are quite nice both in the door jambs and underside areas of the trunk and hood. The correct silver finish basketweave wheels are in excellent condition showing no curb rash or notable marks. A new set of correctly sized Vredestein tires have been installed in preparation for sale.
The supple Natur Bison (tan) leather interior is original to the car and presents in very good condition with only minor evidence of use noted on the driver’s seat bolster, as anticipated given the preservation quality of these original interior finishes. The matching contoured door panels are beautifully preserved with only mild areas of use found in expected touchpoints. The performance-oriented dashboard is also beautifully preserved displaying a combination of black accents with a factory installed stereo and adjustable climate controls. A rare BMW Sport Evo steering wheel is featured, while clear instrumentation, and crisp controls offer original finishes and fine detailing. The matching tan carpet is in excellent condition, showing minor evidence of use, protected by a set of fitted black carpeted floor mats. Overall, the interior presents well-preserved finishes reflective of the documented care and service this M3 has seen since new.
Under the hood, this M3 is a feast for the eyes exhibiting continued originality and excellent detailing. Having been professionally rebuilt in 2010, just 3,000 miles have accumulated since, which reduced heat cycled effects to the finishes. The contrasting BMW M Power twin-cam cover with the distinctive brushed alloy lettering is also depicted on the chambered air box at the opposite side of the engine. Underneath the car, the condition is quite nice overall. Modest evidence of use appears in selected areas, but the floor pan, engine castings, suspension components, and aftermarket exhaust are clean and well-maintained. There is no visual evidence of structural compromise to the floor or any of the major suspension attachment points.
The car starts, drives and handles very much in keeping with the highly revered status associated with these cars. The rebuilt engine is impressive with fantastic throttle response and strong pull in any of the five speeds. The combination of excellent ride and sport handling is a hallmark of the M3, even more so with the slightly lowered stance offered on this car. Comfortable cruising at highway speeds, confident braking with even tracking, and a slightly more robust exhaust note makes this package very attractive for any M3 enthusiast.
The BMW M3 established a new benchmark for performance sedans, launching what would become an entirely new series of remarkable cars. And while the modern M3 still reigns as a premium performance sedan, history will continue to favor well-maintained and documented legacy M3 examples such as this one – exemplifying the very best in classic BMW motoring, designed for true performance enthusiasts.
