OVERVIEW

Though more than 70 years have lapsed since the original debuted to the public, the legendary Porsche 356 remains today a hallmark of sports car design. With its unique profile and race-inspired lineage, the 356 became the first Porsche to proudly bear the family name of Ferdinand Porsche. Introduced in 1948, the 356 continually evolved with cosmetic and mechanical refinements until 1965, when production concluded with the arrival of the 911. Throughout the years of development, the most impressive advancements came in the final years with the launch of the 356C. Important improvements included Dunlop four-wheel disc brakes, higher lift camshaft in the 1600C engine, and deeper contoured bucket seats. The 356C set a new standard of performance for the model line with up-rated 1600 SC replacing the Super 90, providing increased performance, drivability, and an impressive top speed of 125 mph.

Documented by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this Karmann bodied SC Coupe was produced June 29, 1964, finished in Dolphin Grey/6410 and trimmed with Blue Leatherette interior. The Porsche CoA further confirms the original engine number (812499) and the 741/2C 4-speed transmission number 80096, both of which are single strike stamped on factory casings and remain in the car today. Outfitted from the factory with ventilated chrome wheels and wheel caps with Porsche crests, green tinted windshield, and fitted with 165/15 Phoenix tires, the completed car was delivered to a dealer in North America.

The subject of a comprehensive restoration performed by marque specialists circa 2016-2018, this 356 was shown at the Colorado Concours, where it received 239.2 out of a possible 240 points. It has recently benefitted from an engine rebuild by Cantrell Motorsports in 2022. Restoration and service records accompanying this Porsche date back to 2016.

Today, this Porsche 356SC still retains beautiful finishes representative of the high-quality restoration performed some years ago. The body and paint are in excellent condition featuring a correct Dolphin Grey finish which is smooth and glossy throughout. The front of the car has been covered in paint protection film. The body panels display excellent panel fit, tight closures, and the engine lid latch bears the Karmann factory stamping “06” which matches the last two digits of the chassis number. Glass, trim, emblems, and chrome plating are also in excellent condition including the correct green tinted Sigla branded windshield per the original options specification. A set of correct date stamped chrome plated wheels and wheel covers featuring Porsche colored center crests wear a set of correctly sized Vredestein Sprint Classic165 HR15 tires.

The blue leatherette interior has been restored to a very high standard with excellent fitting to the seat material, correct pleat lines, correct perimeter piping, and just the right amount of seat bottom foam support reflective of the original specifications. Both the front and rear seats and surrounding seating areas are in excellent condition. The dashboard and beautifully restored original instrumentation present a stunning array, fronted by a correct black finish steering wheel, polished spokes, and an exceptionally fine Porsche crest center emblem. A period correct Blaupunkt AM/FM radio is installed in the dashboard with two speakers mounted in each of the two the forward side panels. Continuing the theme of high-quality materials, correct German Square Weave carpets are trimmed with matching blue perimeter piping protected by a set of peppered blue and grey coco-mats. The headliner, door trim, sun visors, and blue leatherette dash pad cover are all in excellent condition. Truly, the quality of the interior and the color combination make for an impressive visual and tactile experience when sitting behind the wheel of this beautiful 356SC.

Under the hood, the matching numbers 1.6-liter engine and engine bay display correct Porsche components, finishes, and refined details including two correct dual -throat Solex carburetors with Knecht air filter housings, a correct oil filter canister with braided line, authentic and appropriate decals, as well as correct linkages and wiring. The engine compartment is also nicely finished and represents the comprehensive attention to detail afforded when the restoration was completed. The front storage compartment continues restoration excellence with a correct date coded spare tire rim, brown leather retaining strap, and properly finished components.

The undercarriage is also very well restored including not only the matching number engine and transmission underside housings, but the brakes, suspension, floor pans, longitudinal sections, and battery box all properly and correctly finished.

In addition to the fine restoration, this 356 is, quite simply, a delight to drive. The engine starts easily and settles into a smooth resting idle. The clutch and 4-speed gearbox are nicely paired with smooth engagement. Power comes on strong in all gears, handling is particularly nimble, and Dunlop four-wheel brakes scrub speed confidently. Driving at speed, one is impressed with the integrity and feel this Karman Coupe offers. And while so many restored Porsches are relegated to display pieces, this 356 offers confident driving manners combined with fine cosmetics.

Accompanied by the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a set of tools and tool roll, this Porsche 356C SC is ready for driving events, car club tours, or Porsche Concours shows. With so many of the visceral aspects of driving lacking in our modern cars, the 356 legacy continues to be the siren of motoring adventure, urging us to discover the simple pleasure of driving a wonderfully restored vintage Porsche.
