OVERVIEW

Launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1974, the Porsche 930 was primarily developed to homologate the 911 for motorsport. Released in 1975, and following on to the US model release for 1976, the turbocharged 911 made waves on the street and the track. Derivatives of the Porsche 930 platform went on to dominate international motorsports in the late 1970s and well into the 1980s.

While the first 3.0L Porsche 930s for the US market arrived in 1976, they later saw a displacement bump for the 1979 model year. However, challenges with the US emissions rules led Porsche to not offer the car to the US market from 1980 through 1986. 1987 was the return of the glorious 930 to the US market, and the car was well received and filled all childhood dreams in the late 1980s. All the right curves and the spoiler helped let everyone know this was indeed a special “Porsche 911.”

Built in May of 1987, this specific car was originally delivered to Houston, Texas. The car and original owner then moved to Southern California in January 1989 where it spent the next 24 years (until 2013), accumulating only a handful of miles each year, and has a full CA smog history from 1992 to 2013.

In 2013, the car was acquired and traded, ultimately ending up at Canepa in Scotts Valley, CA. While at Canepa, the car and handled some major service work (gaskets, filters, fluids, plugs, etc.) and cosmetic detailing to bring the car up to the current standard. The car was then sold to a new owner in Washington State (the 2nd “private party” owner per records). The car joined a noted collection where it was loved and serviced annually before trading to another Washington collector two years later in 2016. It has continued to receive annual oil service and very limited use since acquisition in 2016.

Spectacularly presented in black over black, this exceptional 1987 Porsche 930 is an original US market delivery car. As would be expected at 5,600 miles, the car maintains all original finishes – paint, interior, glass, and wheels. Both the engine and luggage compartment areas are extraordinary in presentation. The condition shows that car has been properly stored and maintained since day one.

Documentation includes a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity (COA), as well as extensive records from the 2013 Canepa acquisition and related work through current ownership. The original specification shows the following options, also confirmed by the COA:

  • C02 – Catalytic Converter, US Model
  • 018 – Steering Wheel with Elevated Hub
  • 158 – Cassette-radio Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46
  • 220 – Locking Differential – 40%
  • 533 – Alarm
  • 650 – Sunroof

An exceptional and original car in person, with almost no signs of use. This 930 is ready for any world class Porsche collection or concours, without excuse. Offered with Porsche COA, original books, manuals, tool kit, jack, air pump, and documentation file. An example of the venerable Porsche 930 like this will always remain a significant automobile for many years to come.
