OVERVIEW

Renault attacked the world rallying scene with the launch of the R5 Turbo in 1980 at the Brussels Motor Show. With styling by Bertone, Renault managed to shove a turbocharged power plant in the back of the standard R5 chassis – although once complete there was very little left “standard".

Originally developed under the FIA Group 4 rules (which specified a minimum of 400 examples built), the Renault R5 Turbo would see its first notable success with Jean Ragnotti winning the 1981 Monte Carlo Rally. Other notable Group 4 cars in the period included the Lancia Stratos and the Ford Escort RS 1800.

Group 4 regulations would later evolve the Renault R5 Turbo to become classified under Group B, where the R5 Maxi Turbo continued to see successes on the tight tarmac events such as Tour de Corse, where the Renault continued to see outright victory as late as 1985 against stiff AWD completion in Group B at that time.

With just 3,576 R5 Turbos produced over the total production run, these are rare street legal homologation specials. Weighing just 2100 lbs, The Renault R5 Turbo is a very quick and lively drive in standard format.

Our example here benefits from recent cosmetic and mechanical work over the last few years. The exterior factory shade of blue repaint was completed to a very high standard and shows well in person. This exterior work included the bumpers and rockers as well in correct factory finishes, and new light lenses.  Fresh Michelin TRX tires on restored original Renault wheels have been fitted as well within last 300 miles.

The interior remains highly original, from the carpets to the headliner – all in very presentable original condition. Some warm patina can be seen on the steering wheel leather, and all factory Jaeger gauges and assocaited lights are in working order. Engine rebuild claimed in 2009 (no paperwork present from that owner) however the claim seems reasonable based on inspection and driving – no smoke, no leaks, great power and overall characteristics. Recent mechanical work in 2018 includes all new fuel lines (engine and tank side), intake hoses, coolant hoses, and suspension ride height tuning.

This car is a blast to drive – It is very light, and the dedicated driver is rewarded with a nimble platform that will rotate on demand. To be honest, one of the most unexpectedly delightful cars to drive in recent memory! The transmission shifts smoothly in all gears, and strong stable brakes for such a lightweight little homologation special.

Offered with service records from the current ownership, as well as a small selection of Renault literature items and models, this Renault R5 Turbo is a great addition to any collection. Car has clean and clear WA state title, ready for USA sale, or easy export to any country.
