The 1969 model year marked an important milestone in the evolution of the Porsche 911. Finished in its striking factory color of Bahama Yellow, this 1969 Porsche 911T is far more than simply a beautifully preserved early 911. Purchased new from Freeway Volkswagen in Seattle, this 911T was delivered to Allan Caldwell, whose name is instantly recognizable to generations of PCA members. A lifelong Porsche enthusiast, Caldwell became one of the club's foremost technical authorities, serving for many years as a technical editor and contributor to Panorama magazine while authoring countless technical articles beginning in 1972. His writing educated thousands of owners and helped establish many of the maintenance and restoration standards that enthusiasts still follow today.
Perhaps even more remarkable than his connection to the car is the length of his stewardship. Caldwell owned this 911 for approximately thirty years, finally passing it on in 1999 to fellow Pacific Northwest Porsche enthusiast Andrew Bacon. Aside from one very brief caretaker who owned the car for only a matter of weeks (who was talking about converting it into a race car before Mr. Bacon saved it), the car has effectively remained in the hands of just two passionate Porsche enthusiasts from new until our recent acquisition.
That careful stewardship is evident throughout. Showing just 139,000 miles, the car remains an exceptionally honest and original survivor. It retains its original matching-numbers engine and drivetrain, much of its factory Bahama Yellow paint, and its wonderfully preserved original interior. Rather than being restored beyond recognition, this 911 tells its story through decades of careful ownership and sympathetic preservation. Under original ownership with Mr. Caldwell, it was fitted with a period temperature gauge on the left side of the dash, along with original Porsche floormats that remain in exceptional condition today, along with all the carpet under them. It possesses the authenticity that collectors increasingly value and that simply cannot be recreated.
While preserving its originality was paramount, we wanted the next owner to enjoy the car exactly as Ferry Porsche intended. To that end, the car has just completed an extensive mechanical recommissioning under the care of renowned Porsche expert Bernie Buschen. A longtime Porsche factory-trained technician with decades of experience servicing early air-cooled 911s, Bernie was the ideal choice to preserve the car's originality while ensuring it performs exactly as intended. The work included a comprehensive engine reseal, installation of a new clutch, rebuilding of the Bosch CDI ignition box with a new wiring harness, new Koni shock absorbers, valve adjustment, complete fluid service, rebuilt rear brake calipers, and a new set of period-correct Pirelli CN36 tires. The result is a wonderfully sorted early 911 that starts easily, drives confidently, and reminds you why these cars earned such a devoted following. Original cars that have been thoughtfully maintained simply have a character all their own.
The 911T has long lived in the shadow of the higher-performance E and S models, but that perception has changed dramatically in recent years. The T offers everything enthusiasts love about an early 911—light weight, delicate steering, a wonderfully mechanical feel, and a free-revving air-cooled flat-six—without the added complexity or cost associated with its higher-specification siblings. Many experienced Porsche collectors will tell you that a well-sorted 911T is one of the most enjoyable early 911s to drive on modern roads.
Complementing the car itself is an extraordinary collection of documentation accumulated over more than five decades. Included are the original bill of sale from Freeway Volkswagen, the original window sticker, owner's manuals, service booklet, toolkit, original license plate frames, extensive service records, and, perhaps most special of all, family photo albums documenting the car during Allan Caldwell's ownership. Few early 911s can offer this level of continuity between their history and the people who cared for them.
